Race report
A group with Magnus Cort, Mauro Schmid, Andrea Vendrame, Tobias Bayer, Edward Theuns, Koen Bouwman, Fernando Gaviria, Edoardo Affini, Alessandro Tonelli, Clément Davy, Davide Ballerini, Attila Valter opens a gap after 10 km. The peloton keeps chasing until kilometre 26 and then the gap extends to 11 minutes.
Bouwman, Schmid, Valter and Tonelli are the last men standing on the Kolovrat. Bouwman seals his KOM victory at the summit, where the peloton is trailing at 8 minutes.
Vendrame regains contact on descent and the five tackle the finish climb together. Despite several moves they are still together under the flamme rouge.
Bouwman is the first rider to take the sharp left-hand turn just before the finish. Schmid can’t keep his position and finishes in second after the Dutchman, while Tonelli crosses the line in third. Valter and Vendrame miss the lefthander and are unable to sprint for the win.
Meanwhile, Carapaz strikes on the lowers slopes with Hindley and Landa in his wheel. The three come home together, 4 minutes behind Bouwman. Carapaz stays in pink, 3 seconds ahead of Hindley with Landa 1 minute further behind.
