Mads Pedersen leads the Giro d’Italia ahead of Wout van Aert and Orluis Aular. Today’s stage is an individual time trial, while tomorrow features a mountainous stage with a flat finale. Monday is a rest day, after which the race resumes on Italian soil with an opportunity for the sprinters. The first summit finish is scheduled for Friday, while next Sunday brings the Giro’s take on the Strade Bianche.

Saturday, 10 May – The 2nd stage of the Giro is a 13.7-kilometre individual time trial in the Albanian capital, Tirana. The riders face a 1.2 kilometre-climb at 5.7% midway through the route.

The riders face a challenging three weeks, with a hilly opening weekend in Albania and plenty of opportunities for attackers. As always, the final week stands out with a string of monster climbs, such as the Mortirolo and the Colle delle Finestre. The Giro comes to a close on Sunday 1 June, in Rome.

Sunday, 11 May – Stage 3 of the Giro d’Italia takes the riders on a loop from Vlorë to Vlorë. Over the 160-kilometre route, they face 2,800 metres of elevation gain. The toughest ascent is the Llogara Pass – 10.7 kilometres long at an average gradient of 7.4%, with the summit coming just under 39 kilometres from the finish.

Tuesday, 13 May - After three days in Albania, the peloton crosses into the heel of the Italian boot. On a mostly flat stage of 189 kilometres, the riders sweep down the entire heel, heading for the Giro’s first bunch sprint.

Wednesday, 14 May – Stage 5 of the Giro d’Italia takes the peloton from Ceglie Messapica to Matera. The 151-kilometre route is largely flat, but a punchy hill looms with around 30 kilometres to go, and the terrain remains challenging afterwards. Is the finale tough enough to derail a bunch sprint?
