Race report
Nairo Quintana and Giulio Pellizzari sprint for the KOm points at the summit of the Passo sella and they push on in the descent. Julian Alaphilippe and Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier rejoin them and the two reach the valley in the race lead.

Back in the valley, Georg Steinhauser, Davide Ballerini, Damiano Caruso, and Marco Frigo track down the four leaders, while Nicola Conci and Attila Valter extend the lead group to ten on the Passo Rolle. They open up a 2 minutes lead until Team dsm-firmenich PostNL takes the reins to halve the gap.

Pellizzari takes most KOM points at the Passo Rolle, while the peloton closes in to 20 seconds in the valley. The attackers are caught on the early slopes of the Passo Gobbera.

Ghebreigzabhier attacks just before the summit and Steinhauser goes after him. The two widen their lead on the Passo Brocon to 2 minutes before Steinhauser heads out alone with 2 kilometres to climb.

Steinhauser enters the finish climb 45 seconds ahead of Ghebreigzabhier. The Eritrean is reeled in on the ascent, but the 23-year-old German extends his lead over the GC group to 3 minutes. Ben O Connor loses contact in the final kilometres, which inspires Daniel Felipe Martinez to accelerate and the GC group further disintegrates. Eventually, Tadej Pogacar distances the others.

By then, Steinhauser’s lead is comfortable enough to secure his first victory in a Grand Tour. The pink jersey finishes in second to extends his lead on GC to over 7 minutes.
