Race report
Marco Frigo attacks from the start. For 30 kilometres, he races ahead of the pack with a small lead, and then he is caught.

Then Davide Ballerini, Mirco Maestri, Andrea Piccolo, and Julian Alaphilippe give it a dig. The four open up a 2 minutes lead, but it’s down to 1 minute when they enter the Passo Pinei. Alaphilippe heads out alone on the climb and he distances the peloton to 2 minutes.

Pelayo Sánchez attacks from the main group with 20 kilometres remaining. Ewen Costiou, Christian Scaroni and Giulio Pellizzari counter-attack 5 kilometres later, while Romain Bardet is dropped from the peloton.

The three chasers rejoin Alaphilippe with 5 kilometres to go on the Monte Pana. The peloton is 25 seconds behind at that point.

The last 2 kilometres are a wall. Costiou heads out alone, but Pellizzari counters him. In the background it is the pink jersey who drops all other riders. He gobbles up Pellizzari with 600 metres left to take his fifth stage win in the Giro.

Daniel Felipe Martínez drops Geraint Thomas to finish in third to move up to second place overall.
