Race report
Stojnic and Warbasse attack early on to open up a 1 minute gap. Several riders want to join them and the pace remains high. Derek Gee and Alex Baudin bridge across when the gap has fallen to 15 seconds. Magnus Cort is next, shortly followed by Konrad, Prodhomme, Pronskiy, Gaburro. Buitrago, Oldani and Hepburn make it twelve at the front after 63 kilometres of frantic action.
But we are not quite there yet. Rojas, Verona and Bais (Mattia) rejoin the leaders in the climb preceding the Passo Campolongo. Meanwhile, Healy attacks from the peloton and Pinot tracks him down in the battle for the KOM jersey. The Frenchman is a threat on GC and the attack is neutralised by INEOS.
The peloton takes it easy and the leaders open up a maximum gap of over 8 minutes.
Verona sets off on Passo Giau and Gee and Buitrago rejoin him. Hepburn and Cort make it back also, while the dropped riders regain contact on descent.
Warbasse attacks from the lead group in the early slopes of the Passo Tre Croci. Buitrago opens the chase a few kilometres later and Cort goes with him. The two gobble up the American, while Gee tracks down the two. Moments later Hepburn pops up.
Gee strikes 7 kilometres before the finish. Buitrago is the first chaser in the last kilometres. The gap hovers around 20 metres for quite awhile until the Colombian overhauls the Canadian with 1.5 kilometres to. Meanwhile, Dunbar and Leknessund lose contact in the GC group.
While Buitrago heads for triumph, Roglic accelerates in the lower slopes. Thomas follows his move. Almeida loses contact at first, but he comes clawing back. As are Arensman and Caruso.
Then it’s the pink jersey who gives it a go. Roglic follows until Thomas goes again. A gap opens and the maglia rosa keeps on pushing on the steep ramps. He distances Roglic a little, but the Slovene does not give in and he overhauls Thomas on the home straight.
Roglic just misses out on the time bonus as Cort finishes before him. Thomas loses 3 seconds, but he stays in the race lead. Almeida crosses the line 23 seconds after Roglic and he starts the Monte Lussari ITT 59 seconds behind the maglia rosa.
