Race report
In a frantic opening Gino Mäder, Matej Mohoric, Dario Cataldo, Jimmy Janssens and Simon Guglielmi open up a gap after 20 kilometres. Simone Ravanelli is the first rider to bridge, while Geoffrey Bouchard and Bauke Mollema close the gap after a long chase. The eight race to a maximum lead of more than 5 minutes.
INEOS Grenadiers opens fire in the last part of the first long climb, the Forca di Gualdo. Pink jersey De Marchi misses the move and he is distanced.
Team mates Mohoric and Mäder attack in the long descent of the Forca di Presta before Mollema and Cataldo track them down, while Ciccone, Bardet and Bettiol attack in the peloton. The three are brought back just before the San Giacomo climb.
The four leaders enter the finish climb almost 3 minutes ahead of the peloton. Mohoric, who has been pulling in the valley for Mäder, drops back on the early slopes.
The lead of the attackers falls to 1 minute with 3.2 kilometres remaining when Mäder goes alone. Meanwhile, Martínez strikes in the peloton.
A double acceleration by Bernal inside the last 2 kilometres is followed by Evenepoel, Ciccone and Dan Martin. They gobble the attackers, except for one. Mäder soles to victory before Bernal outsprints Martin for second place.
Valter crosses the line 29 seconds later to move into the overall race lead, 11 seconds ahead of Evenepoel with Bernal in third at 15 seconds.
