Race report
Taco van der Hoorn is the most active rider and the Dutchman initiates the breakaway. KOM leader Vincenzo Albanese, Lars van den Berg, Simon Pellaud, Samuele Zoccarato, Samuele Rivi and Alexis Gougeard are also on board, while Andrii Ponomar tracks the seven down. The lead group carves out a maximum lead of more than 6 minutes.
Albanese extends his KOM lead at the top of the first two classified climbs, while Zoccarato and Pellaud strikes on the third. Pellaud is the first rider to reach the top, approximately 1 minute ahead of the peloton. Most sprinters – except Sagan, Viviani and Gaviria – have been dropped.
Pellaud and Van der Hoorn head out together on the climb to Guarene, while Gallopin and Ciccone attack from the peloton.
While Van der Hoorn leaves Pellaud behind inside the last 9 kilometres, the other attackers are gobbled up by the peloton. The Dutchman forges on to win the race with a margin of 4 seconds. Cimolai wins the sprint for second place.
Ganna keeps the pink jersey and because Affini drops back Foss and Evenepoel move up to second and third overall.
