Race report
Just before reaching Florence five riders – Dries De Bondt, Simone Ravanelli, Mikkel Honoré, Vincenzo Albanese, Diego Ulissi – jump off the front. Geoffrey Bouchard, George Bennett, Andrea Vendrame, Natnael Tesfazion, Simone Petilli, Guy Niv, Chris Hamilton, Victor Campenaerts and Gianluca Brambilla bridge across in the capital of Tuscany, while Giovanni Visconti and Nicolas Edet rejoin the leaders later. The sixteen open up a gap of more than 12 minutes.
Bouchard reaches the summit of the first three climbs in first position to cement his KOM lead.
Brambilla accelerates on the Passo della Carnaio before Vendrame counter attacks. Hamilton, Bennett and Brambilla rejoin the Italian 3 kilometres before the summit.
After coming down the Passo del Carnaio Vendrame and Hamilton leave the other two behind. The Italian outpowers the Australian in the ensuing sprint.
Bernal stays in pink ahead of Vlasov and Caruso.
