Race report
Eleven riders jump clear shortly after the start. As the peloton takes it easy, Harm Vanhoucke, Enrico Battaglin, Roger Kluge, Alexandro Covi, Francesco Gavazzi, Mauro Schmid, Dries de Bondt, Taco van der Hoorn, Bert-Jan Lindeman, Lawrence Naesen and Simon Guglielmi enter the first gravel sector with a lead of almost 15 minutes.
Evenepoel and Vlasov lose contact with the group Bernal/Ciccone on sterrato 1. They leave the dust road with a 30 seconds deficit before regaining contact on tarmac. Dan Martin and Formolo miss the move.
The leaders enter the penultimate sterrato with a 7 minutes lead, while Evenepoel can’t follow the pace in the GC group. Moscon and Bernal up the pace to leave the sterrato 1 minute ahead of the Flemish youngster.
Covi and Schmid are the remaining attackers after the last sector, while Buchmann attacks from the GC group on the last climb. Ciccone and Soler are distanced.
Vlasov jumps clear before the top with Bernal in his wheel. The pink jersey overhauls his rival and tracks Buchmann down. The two enter the descent together.
Meanhile, two youngsters battle it out for the stage win. Covi opens his sprint early before Schmid overhauls him with an impressive surge.
Bernal crosses the line in 11th position to extend his overall race lead. Vlasov sits in second at 45 seconds, Caruso in third at 1.12 minutes. Evenepoel drops to seventh place, 2.22 minutes down on the maglia rosa.
