Race report
Pellaud, Marengo, Rivi and Van der Hoorn escape in the early kilometres and Goossens tracks them down. The five open up a gap 2 minutes before the peloton takes the reins.
While approaching the hilly zone inside the 50 kilometres BORA-hansgrohe ups the pace in the peloton. Groenewegen is the first sprinter to lose contact, while the attackers are reeled in on the Valico della Somma. Merlier can’t follow the pace 5 kilometres before the summit, while Nizzolo is dropped in the last kilometre of climbing. The Italian tries to make it back with assistance of Campenaerts, but to no avail.
In the intermediate sprint with 17 kilometres remaining Evenepoel gains a time bonus of 2 seconds, while Bernal takes 1.
Kanters hits the deck in the finale before Sagan finishes off the hard labour of his team mates. He bests Gaviria on the line, while Cimolai crosses the line in third position.
Bernal retains the maglia rosa, 14 seconds ahead of Evenepoel with Vlasov another 8 seconds furher behind.
