Race report
After 75 kilometres of hard racing Ruben Guerreiro, Eduardo Sepúlveda, Ben O’Connor and Jonathan Castroviejo manage to open up a gap. Larry Warbasse, Giovanni Visconti and Kilian Frankiny track them down and the seven put 7 minutes into the peloton.
Visconti is the first rider over the Passo Lanciano to move into the KOM lead, while Mikkel Bjerg tracks the leaders down in the valley after a long chase.
The lead falls to 5 minutes on the Passo San Leonardo. Visconti once again takes most KOM points.
On the Bosco di Sant’Antonio Visconti, O’Connor and Sepúlveda can’t follow the pace in the lead group.
Castroviejo and Guerreiro heads out together on the finish climb, while Lucas Hamilton and Tao Geoghegan Hart attack in the peloton. It’s too late to fight for the stage win, though.
Guerreio outsprints his Spanish companion, while his compatriot Almeida retains the pink jersey. A strong effort by Kelderman, with Fuglsang in his wheel, in the last kilometre catapults the Dutchman into second place. He moves 18 seconds closer to the GC lead.
