Race report
Geraint Thomas hits the deck in the neutral zone and the race starts with a delay. Attacks are flying from the gun. Matthew Holmes, Giovanni Visconti, Josip Rumac and Francesco Romano open up a gap, while Victor Campenaerts and Lawson Craddock track them down. Holmes punctures and joins two chasers, Mikkel Bjerg and Jonathan Caicedo, to make it back to the front. The eight open up a gap of more than 5 minutes.
Geraint Thomas loses contact with the main group before the finishing climb. Maglia rosa Filippo Ganna and Rohan Dennis try to escort the Welshman back into the peloton, but without success.
Caicedo and Visconti head out together on the Etna climb, while Simon Yates can’t follow the pace in the GC group inside the last 10 kilometres.
Jonathan Castroviejo goes after the two leaders and Harm Vanhoucke tracks him down. Meanwhile Caicedo goes alone with 5 kilometres left.
Kelderman attacks in the GC group. Behind him Majka, Fuglsang, Nibali and Pozzovivo remain together, while other contenders drop back.
Caicedo forges on into a strong headwind to take the win. He misses the maglia rosa by less than 1 second as Almeida takes the jersey.
Kelderman looks very strong. The Dutchman finishes 12 seconds ahead of Majka, Fuglsang and Nibali with Kruijswijk another 5 seconds further behind.
