Race report
Attacks are flying from the gun, but it takes more than 20 kilometres for the breakaway to establish itself. Bouchard, Pellaud, Ravanelli, Contreras, Tonelli, Vanhoucke and Rota open up a gap of 3 minutes.
Bouchard and Tonelli are the remaining attackers after the first of two climbs, while the sprinters – including Démare – are dropped from the peloton.
Just before the second climb Démare et al rejoin the Sagan group, while the attackers are brought back in the last kilometre before the top.
A group with all GC riders reaches the crest 19 seconds ahead of Sagan with Démare another 40 seconds further behind.
The GC group widens the gap in the flat run-in to the finish in Montselice, where Ulissi outguns Almeida and Konrad on the line. The maglia rosa gains a time of of 6 seconds to extend the lead over runner-up Kelderman to 40 seconds, while Bilbao sits 9 seconds futher behind.
