Race report
Straight from the gun Luca Covili and Sho Hatsuyama break clear to race to a lead of more than 4 minutes before the peloton takes the reins. The duo is reeled in with 30 kilometres remaining.
Ventoso goes solo in the final kilometres, but he is brought back before a huge crash under the flamme rouge shakes up the finale. Ackermann is among the victims.
Démare opens his sprint on the left side of the road, while Ewan is on the other side wih Viviani in his wheel. The Italian comes around the Australian but he does not match Démare’s explosion of power, who wins the first Giro-stage in his career. Ewan stops his efforts just before the line and Selig overhauls him for the last podium spot.
No GC rider is involved in the crash and Conti holds the maglia rosa.
