Race report
The flag is dropped and Vendrame, Tonelli, Irizar, Marcato and Zhupa are off. The peloton is okay with that and they race to a lead of more than 3 minutes in no time. The gap keeps hovering around 3 minutes for 130 kilometres.
In the last lap of 30 kms the lead falls below 1 minute. Tony Martin goes after the leaders with Krists Neilands, Eros Capecchi and Davide Ballerini on his wheel, but they don’t make it across.
With 6 kms left the front group is brought back before Marco Coledan jumps clear under the flamme rouge. Sacha Modolo overhauls him with a long-range sprint, but Elia Viviani squeezes through a gap and surges past to outpower each and everyone with an impressive sprint victory. Sam Bennett comes in second at a few bike lengths.
Tomorrow it’s back to the climbers and GC-guys with a high altitude stage and a summit finish at the insanely steep Monte Zoncolan.
