Race report
Once the flag is dropped Giuseppe Fonzi, Simone Ponzi and Dmitry Kozonchuk jump clear to race to a lead of 3 minutes. Then Ponzi faces a mechanical at kilometre 36 and he is swallowed by the bunch. The other two race to a lead of more than 4 minutes before they are reeled in with 20 kms to go.
Koren goes alone with 4 kms to go, but he is gobbled up after a 1 km effort and the race comes down to a fast men’s showdown with Caleb Ewan turning out on top. The Australian pocket-sprinter pips Fernando Gaviria and Sam Bennett on the line, while André Greipel comes in a bike length later.
