Giro d’Italia 2016 Route stage 5: Praia a Mare – Benevento

Giro 2016 stage 5Wednesday, May 11, 2016 – At 233 kilometres. the course between Praia a Mare and Benevento marks one of the longest stages in the 2016 Giro d'Italia. The route is on rolling roads, except for the last 40 kilometres – these are fast men's territory, yet the last kilometre bring a false flat at 3.4%.

Once the flag is dropped, roads are going up until the peak of the day is reached after 35 kilometres in the saddle – Fortino is located at an elevation of 783 metres. The next 50 kilometres are on high plains and then its time for rolling roads. Uphill, downhill for quite a while, before the final 40 kilometres are mostly flat.

The finale in Benevento is on narrow and quite curvy streets. A sharp turn 1,200 metres before the line takes the riders to a cobbled uphill section at 3.4% in the last kilometre.

Last year, the Giro was in Benevento also. Stage 9 left here for a stage teaming with hills. In the end, Tiralongo was strongest of a group of escapees.

In 2009 it was the last occasion that Benevento was arrival town. Michele Scarponi powered to victory.

At the line, time bonuses at 10, 6 and 4 seconds lay waiting, while intermediate sprints come with 3, 2 and 1 seconds each.
