Giro d’Italia 2016 Stage 2: Kittel powers to clear win, Dumoulin retains in lead

At 190 kilometres, stage 2 in the Giro d'Italia takes the riders on a detour from Arnhem to Nijmegen, while both cities are actually only 20 kilometres apart. The race boils down to a bunch sprint with Marcel Kittel in a class of his own. He now is only 1 second down on leader Tom Dumoulin. (Slideshow route/profile)

Race report
Once the flag is dropped homerider Maarten Tjallingii escapes with Omar Fraile en Giacomo Berlato. It’s spot on and they race to a lead at over 10 minutes.

Fraile takes the only KOM-points in the stage at the Van Randwijckweg climb.

With 20 kms left Berlato goes solo and a moment later the other two escapees are reeled in. Berlato’s story is over with 10 kms remaining.

In the inevitable bunch sprint Marcel Kittel outpowers each and everyone, taking a time bonus of 10 seconds.
