In the last 32 kilometres there is, apart from a 8 kilometres drop, really one way: up. And these certainly are not the only mountains on today’s menu. In fact, the only flat kilometres are at the start and from kilometre 20 onwards the road goes either up or down, meaning it will be hard to control the race. And since we are halfway the Giro, we can expect the teams of the GC men to take it easy for a change, opening chances for the breakaway boys to be successful.
Likely escapees go by the names of Giovanni Visconti, Alessandro De Marchi, Matej Mohoric, Tim Wellens, Davide Formolo, Stefano Pirazzi and Przemyslaw Niemiec. And who knows what GC guys have been overtaken by events and have only breakaways left to make something out of the Giro. That was the way Steven Kruiswijk raced a perfect Giro last year. Don’t be surprised if such a scenario is waiting for the GC winner of 2012, Ryder Hesjedal. The Canadian loves the attack, which brought him a stage win in the 2014 Vuelta.
Talking about Kruijswijk: he is riding very well this Giro, so we could expect him to move to the fore in stage 10 if it boils down to a clash between GC guys.
