Stage Report
The break of the day is made up of Dockx, Canola, Romero, Tulik and Rodriguez. Soon they have a gain of 1’30” when Belkov crosses the gap. As a team of six the gap grows to a max of 3’30”. But because Giant Shimano (Mezgec) and FDJ (Bouhanni) are speeding in the peloton the gap never really widens.
With 40 kilometres left Trek (Nibbolo) and Cannondale (Viviani) are upfront as well. With four collaborating sprint teams the escapees gain is soon under 2 minutes.
But then a strange thing happens. When Canola, Tulik and Rodriguez drop their fellow escapees the pace in the chasing pack drops. With 4 kilometres left the gain upfront is still over a minute.
Marco Canola gives a mighty show of strength and powers to victory outsprinting his companions. Rodriguez comes in second, Tulik third. Bouhanni is fastest in the pack thus securing his lead in the points classification.
