Giro 2014: Stage 15 Favourites: Montecampione, for a non-GC climber
A relatively flat stage until the last 19 kilometres, where the riders ascend a total of 1,446 metres. It's another opportunity for GC men to gain time on rivals but also a chance for the mounatin goats not involved in the GC to escape to victory. (Slideshow route/profile)
Names that spring to mind if an escape is to succeed are Dario Cataldo, Thomas De Gendt, Domenico Pozzovivo, Michele Scarponi and Wout Poels (image). That is, of course, if these riders are not too high on GC.
Given stage 14 looks to be a decisive one in the GC battle, it’s hard to know if the Giro’s Big will have the legs to try again today or if an understanding is reached where attacks are limited.
If the GC riders do end up battling it out for the stage honours it’s hard to look past Quintana and Uran. The reality is that these three will not win every stage that goes uphill however and today we’re expecting that someone further down the GC will ride to the win.
