Race report
Sam Maisonobe, Marco Haller, Emils Liepins, and Jasha Sütterlin initiate the breakaway after 10 kilometres of action. Max Walker, Victor Vercouillie, Samuel Leroux, Rui Oliveira, and Alexys Brunel track them down, and the nine open up a 4-minute gap.
The gap goes down fast due to echelons in De Moeren, while Victor Campenaerts and Johan Jacobs start to give chase with 100 kilometres to go. The first joins the lead group, the latter does not, and because Vercouillie can’t follow on the first ascent of the Kemmelberg, the lead group features nine riders again.
On the first Plugstreets sector, Mads Pedersen accelerates with Olav Kooij on his wheel. The Dutchman crashes, and Jasper Philipsen suffers a puncture. The only rider able to follow the Dane is Arjen Livyns. They pick up the riders who have been dropped from the breakaway, and position themselves at the front well before the second series of climbs.
Pedersen heads out alone on the Kemmelberg. He puts 1.30 minutes into the first chasers, Campenaerts, Livyns, and Haller, while the peloton crests the Kemmelberg for the final time with a 2-minute disadvantage.
Before reaching Ypres, the three are caught by the peloton. The solo rider passes through the Menin Gate with a lead of 1.30 minutes. That’s more than enough for the win. A little under a minute later, Tim Merlier sprints to second place, just ahead of Jonathan Milan.
