Race report
Following a fast start José Gonçalves, Brian van Goethem and Frederik Frison open up a gap at km 30. Jan-Willem van Schip, Filippo Ganna and Jimmy Duquennoy join the three leaders. The six widen the gap to 10 minutes.
The race ignites on the three unpaved sectors. Starting at km 60, the so called ‘plugstreets’ follow in rapid succession. The gap falls to 2 minutes and Wallays, Kuznetsov, Kirsch and Vermote take off. Just before the Kemmelberg they rejoin the six leaders.
After the steep cobbles of the Kemmelberg the front group is down to Kuznetsov, Kirsch, Wallays, Vermote, Van Goethem and Van Schip. The six are 1’30” adrift, but it goes down fast. An elite group with Matthews, Viviani, Trentin, Sagan (Peter), Laporte, Gilbert, Stybar, Stuyven, Vanmarcke, Démare, Van Avermaet and Naesen gobbles them up with 25 kms to go, just before moving through Ypres.
It comes down to a bunch sprint. Peter Sagan opens it up to power to his third win in Gent-Wevelgem, which makes him one of the record holders. Elia Viviani and Arnaud Démare round out the podium.
