Race report
Most notable in the first 60 kilometres is the withdrawal of Alberto Bettiol and Danny van Poppel. And the strikingly high pace, helped by a tailwind.
After over an hour, Taco van der Hoorn, Joshua Giddings, Fabio Christen, Rasmus Pedersen, and Petr Kelemen join forces. Lewis Askey, Mikkel Bjerg and Ceriel Desal track them down. The eight put the peloton at 1 minute, but the gap doesn’t grow any further, as the bunch is on the move.
Bjerg and Rasmus Pedersen head out together in the run-up to the first cobbled sector of the Mariaborrestraat. The peloton is hot on their heels, which inspires Joshua Tarling, Neilson Powless, and Fabio Van den Bossche to jump across
The three catch up with Bjerg and Rasmus Pedersen before Berg Ten Houte, while a powerplay by Visma|Lease a Bike stretches the peloton until it breaks. Wout van Aert, Matteo Jorgenson, and Tiesj Benoot make the junction to the front on the climb itself. Tarling loses contact.
On the Trieu, only Powless is able to follow the yellow trio. What’s left of the peloton trails at the top by 15 seconds. The leaders double that gap and slowly but surely, they continue to pull away.
On the cobbles of Herlegemstraat, Mads Pedersen, Stefan Küng, Tibor Del Grosso, Dries De Bondt, Arjen Livyns, and Alec Segaert drop the other chasers. Not really to fight for the win, as the gap is already over 1 minute.
Visma | Lease a Bike puts all their chips on a sprint victory for Van Aert, only to be left disappointed as Powless proves the faster finisher. The American stuns the trio, winning the three-against-one battle to take a surprise victory in Dwars door Vlaanderen.
