Ras al Khaimah, which is the capital of the emirate with the same name, lies north of Dubai. Last year’s Dubai Tour saw a first ever Dubai Tour’s finish in the place. Marcel Kittel outsprinted Dylan Groenewegen and Jakub Mareczko.
Ras al Khaimah is one of the seven emirates of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). According to UAE standards it’s a fertile place. More rainfall than in the surrounding emirates and underground water streams from the mountains of Oman account for more green areas. Yet, the riders will mostly see blue – in the skies above and in the Persian Gulf that will be on their left for most of the day. The route is prototypical Dubai Tour – flat.
The 2nd stage is a Tour of the United Arab Emirates. Following the start in Dubai the peloton moves through the emirates Sharjah, Ajman and Umm al Qaiwain to finish in Ras al Khaimah.
The first three riders one the line in the 2018 Dubai Tour take time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds, while the intermediate sprints (at kilometre 19.3 and 124) of stage 2 come with 3, 2 and 1 seconds.
