Vuelta 2018 Stage 17: Michael Woods climbs to glory, Simon Yates retains La Roja

La Vuelta's 17th stage is crammed with hills and mountains. The most demanding climb is saved for the finale when the riders tackle Monte Oiz, a steep and narrow toil above the Balcón de Bizkaia. In the mist-shrouded finale Michael Woods outclimbs Dylan Teuns, while Simon Yates keeps the race lead, although Alejandro Valverde gains 8 seconds with a late attack.

Vuelta 2018 Route stage 17: Getxo – Balcón de Bizkaia

Wednesday, 12 September 2018 - The 17th stage at the Vuelta a España is a Basque affair. And therefore, almost by definition, mountainous. The race starts in Getxo to end after 157 kilometres in the saddle on a steep climb above Balcón de Bizkaia. The last 3.9 kilometres of the route is a toil at 11%.

The Vuelta a España's 17th stage is emblematic for the Spanish Grand Tour. The route features more than 3,000 vertical metres, while the line lies on a goat track at the end of a 7.1 kilometres climb at 9.1%. The final 3.9 kilometres go up at 11% on narrow concrete slabs.
