Tour de France 2018 Stage 12: Geraint Thomas cements lead in Alpe d’Huez

The Tour de France's 12th stage is the third Alpine test in a row. Following a heroic 70 kilometres solo by Steven Kruijswijk, the race boils down to a sprint of five with maillot jaune Geraint Thomas winning ahead of Tom Dumoulin and Romain Bardet. It is the second consecutive victory of Thomas, who extends his overall lead.

Thursday, 19 July 2018 – Travelling from Bourg-Saint-Maurice to Alpe d'Huez, the 12th stage of the Tour de France amounts to 175.5 kilometres. With the haute catégorie giants Col de la Madeleine and Col de la Croix de Fer as intermediate climbs, this is a Classic Tour de France stage in the Alps. The iconic 21 hairpins of the Alpe account for a challenging finale with 13.8 kilometres of climbing at 8.1%.

Tour de France 2018 Favourites stage 12: Attackers on legendary climb

The Alpe d'Huez climb has legendary status. It's not the hardest climb on the Tour de France, but the twenty-one numbered switchbacks, each labelled with the names of former winners, inspire awe. Dutch fans usually outnumber all others, but the French have been much more successful on the mountain in recent years.
