At 216 kilometres, stage 5 has the first serious climbs in this year's Tour de France on offer. Van Avermaet brings an early break home with an impressive solo that brings him the yellow jersey. De Gendt finishes in second. After a late attack in the group with GC guys Contador is dropped and he loses half a minute to his opponents.

Wednesday, July 6, 2016 – At 216 kilometres, stage 5 takes the riders to ski resort Le Lioran. The first mountain stage of the 2016 Tour de France has three mountains in Massif Central on offer. While the finish is 2.5 kilometres after cresting Col de Font Cère, the race still brings an uphill finish as the last few hundred metres are at a 6% grade.
