The last mountain stage features three long and hard climbs in the last 84 kilometres. Birthday boy Mikel Nieve kicks on the penultimate climb to leave the breakaway behind and he solos to victory. Tom Dumoulin puts pressure on Chris Froome on the last climb, but the Briton holds on to win his third Grand Tour victory in a row.

Giro d’Italia 2016 Stage 13: Nieve soloes to glory in third mountain stage, Amador new overall leader

In stage 13 the riders are to crest four peaks, yet the finish is in the valley - 13 kilometres after the last top. Mikel Nieve is the strongest climber in the break of the day and he soloes to victory. Bob Jungels is dropped on the last climb, and he is forced to hand over the pink jersey to Andrey Amador. Nibali bests Valverde in the sprint for third place and now sits in third.

Critérium du Dauphiné 2014 Stage 8 report: Nieve wins stage, Talansky takes GC

Mikel Nieve took a memorable victory in the last stage of the Criterium du Dauphine. However, the stage will be remembered for the amazing GC battle that played out and ended up with Andrew Talansky taking the yellow jersey from Contador after somehow sneaking into the early break.
