Giro 2021: Bernal wins rain soaked mountain stage to cement lead

Egan Bernal strikes on the last climb, the Passo Giau, and he reaches the summit solo. He holds off the chasers in the downhill to Cortina d’Ampezzo and wins the race ahead of Romain Bardet and Damiano Caruso. The Colombian cements his GC lead, the Italian moves up to second place, and Hugh Carthy now sits in third position overall.

No points for any of the contenders for the ciclamen jersey in the 16th stage of the Giro. So Peter Sagan stays in the lead of the points competition.

Monday 24 May - Stage 16 of the Giro d'Italia has been shortened to 153 kilometres due to incessant rains in the Dolomites. The original route would have been an arduous test of 212 kilometres long and with an elevation gain of 5,700 metres. The finale remains unchanged - first the Passo Giau before and then ensuing downhill into Cortina d'Ampezzo.
