Race report
Victor Campenaerts is on the move in the first kilometres. The KOM leader opens a small gap with Franck Bonnamour and Martin Urianstad, while David Gaudu, Andrea Piccolo, Brent Van Moer, Matteo Vercher, Marco Brenner, Fabio Van den Bossche and Gianmarco Garofoli also bridge across.
Giulio Ciccone, Richard Carapaz and Attila Valter join the leaders in the first climb, Côte de Pinet. While the others are caught by the bunch, Ciccone and Campenaerts push on together before Clément Champoussin, Franck Bonnamour, David de la Cruz and Julian Alaphilippe make it six at the front. Campenaerts cements his KOM lead at the summit.
Matteo Trentin, Tiesj Benoot and Nelson Oliveira track the leaders down on the undulating plateau after the top. And again, Campenaerts takes maximum points at the Col des Mouilles.
Alaphilippe, Ciccone en Benoot leave the others behind on the Col du Granier before Champoussin comes clawing back. Jonathan Castroviejo tracks the leaders down on the Col du Cucheron.
Ciccone attacks on the Col de Porte and Alaphilippe goes with him. The Italian leaves the Frenchman behind in the last 3 kilometres of the climb, while Yates attacks from the GC group. Vingegaard follows him like a shadow, while other GC riders bridge across later.
Pedrero strikes from the GC group to reach the summit 30 seconds behind Ciccone. But he can’t bridge across on descent.
Ciccone tackles the finish climb almost 1 minute ahead of the GC group. Which is enough for the stage win. He also takes the polka dot jersey as winner of the KOM competition.
Vingegaard finishes in second to seal the overall victory.
