Race report
It takes a while before the breakaway takes shape. After the second climb seven Frenchman and an Italian join forces. Geoffrey Bouchard, Bruno Armirail, Andrea Biagoli, Victor Lafay, Valentin Ferron, Warren Barguil and Pierre Rolland put more than 4 minutes into the peloton.
Armirail can’t follow the pace on the Col de Cabre. Groenewegen loses contact in the peloton, but he makes it back inside the 30 kilometres.
The leaders enter the last 10 kilometres 2 minutes ahead of the peloton. Which is enough to spent some time playing poker. Then Ferron puts on the afterburners with 800 metres to go. After a moment of hesitation Bagioli sets off in pursuit. But it’s too later. The 24-year old Franch man takes the best triumph in his career.
The peloton finishes 32 seconds later. The GC remains unchanged with Van Aert in yellow.
