Race report
Without leader Roglic, who abandons before the start as he suffers too much from his crash in stage 4, the remaining 136 riders enter the race in Mègeve.
Hugo Hofstetter, Fabien Grellier and Jan Bakelants attack from the gun, but Wout Van Aert brings the trio back on the Côte de Domancy. The Flemish rider pushes on hard until there are only 15 riders left at the front. Alaphilippe reaches the summit ahead of Neilands, Kuss and Van Aert, while the other remaining men are Pinot, Landa, Pogacar, Lutsenko, Castroviejo, Sivakov, Dumoulin, Bardet, Yates, Hirschi and Barta.
The fifteen open up a gap of 1 minute, but it has fallen to 15 seconds at the foot of the Col de Romme. Ten riders riders bridge across before another lead group takes shape: Dumoulin, Lutsenko, Sivakov, Kuss, Pogacar, Bardet, Alaphilippe and De la Cruz. The latter is the first rider over the summit and extends his KOM lead.
The chasers reach the summit 20 seconds after the eight leaders before Superman López, Carthy, Martínez, Kämna, Castroviejo, Pinot, Reichenbach, Bardet, Valverde, Mas, Hirschi, Barguil, Martin and Neilands bridge across in the descent. So Nairo Quintana and Richie Porte have missed the break of the day.
Sivakov and Alaphilipe attack in the Colombière climb and reach the summit with a 45 seconds lead. Landa is not longer on board as he suffers with cramps.
The leaders crest the Aravis climb 1.15 minutes ahead of the group Pinot. De la Cruz is the third rider over the summit and wins the polka dot jersey.
The lead of the duo goes down after the Côte de la Frassette. Then Sivakov hits the deck. He quickly gets back up to rejoin Alaphilippe on the Côte de Domancy. Pogacar attacks in the GC group with López on his wheel. Kuss and Martínez also jump clear.
Pogacar jumps across in the climb and pushes on with Alaphilippe in the descent. The other four rejoin before the next climb, the Côte de Cordon.
Kuss goes alone on the Cordon. Pogacar, Martínez and Sivakov rejoin him, while Pinot is struggling at the back. The deficit is 1.30 minutes at that moment, which would cost him the GC win. Martínez is a real threat at 12 seconds in the GC.
With 9 kilometres to go the advantage of the leaders is down to 40 seconds when Kuss jumps clear. He rides a good pace and wins the stage 27 seconds ahead of Martínez. The Colombian wins the GC with a 29 seconds margin over Pinot, while Martin digs deep to hold onto third place.
