Race report
After the first climb, Côte de Moussages, a strong breakaway is on the road: Tom Dumoulin, Julian Alaphilippe, Michal Kwiatkowski, David Gaudu, Jack Haig, Gorka Izagirre, Benoit Cosnefroy, Rémi Cavagna, Emanuel Buchmann, Gregor Mühlberger, Ruben Fernandez, Sepp Kuss, Carl Fredrik Hagen and Alessandro De Marchi.
While Kwiatkowski sits up to wait for the peloton and be part of the Ineos led chase, the other thirteen riders open up a 2 minutes gap. Alaphilippe takes maximum points at the first five KOM climbs.
Dumoulin, Gaudu, Izagirre and Buchmann go clear on the Côte de La Baraque and they reach the summit 1 minute ahead of the chasers. De Marchi regains contact for a moment, while the others are caught by the peloton. Yet, De Marchi drops back on the Côte de la Barbatte before the remaining leaders are reeled in with 35 kilometres remaining.
A group with Philippe Gilbert, Serge Pauwels, Alexey Lutsenko, Dylan Teuns, Robert Power, Pawel Bernas, Rudy Molard, Nils Politt, Mikaël Cherel, Darwin Atapuma, Guillaume Martin and Petr Vakoc goes on the counter-attack.
Teuns and Martin are the first riders at the summit of the last climb, the steep Côte de Saint-Victor-sur-Arlanc. Dumoulin and leader Bo Hagen drop back in the main group. On the plateau after the summit Pinot puts pressure on his rivals. Kruijswijk, Bardet, Porte and Dan Martin are dropped.
Inside the last 5 kilometres Pinot once again accelerates. Lutsenko and Woods go with him, but Froome closes down the gap.
The race comes down to a sprint-à-deux with Teuns taking the spoils. The Flemish rider is the new leader on GC.
