Race report
On the attack are Christophe Riblon, Tim Wellens, Pieter Serry, Romain Sicard, Arnaud Courteille, Albert Timmer and Daniel Teklehaimanot. The seven race to a maximum advantage of 5 minutes. Obviously, Teklehaimanot is on a mission to cement his KOM lead and he does, gaining 8 points along the way.
On the slopes of the Col d’Allos Wellens, Sicard and Serry are the last ones to be reeled in with Sky setting the pace. Leader Rohan Dennis is amongst – many – riders to have been dropped.
Just before cresting Romain Bardet escapes and in the drop he thunders to a 1’20” advantage. On the closing climb he stands his ground, while Sky once again tortures the pack with favourites. Nibali and Valverde are dropped and a moment later Froome attacks. Van Garderen is the only on to react and just before the finish line he not only catches the Brit, he leaves him as well, thus taking time plus bonus seconds.
