Clásica de San Sebastián 2024: Favourites

Jonas Vingegaard - Clásica de San Sebastián 2024: Favouritesfoto: Cor VosThe Clásica de San Sebastián is a race for punchy climbers with strong descending skills and, preferably, a fast sprint to finish it off when push comes to shove. Who are the major contenders to win the 2024 Clásica de San Sebastián?

The route takes in six ascents before the Pilotegi appears with almost 9 kilometres remaining. The 2 kilometres climb at 11.7% replaces the Murgil in the finale, which was a similar test, so effectually the finale remains more or less the same.

Remco Evenepoel reigns in the Clásica de San Sebastián since 2019. The Olympic Champion didn’t compete in 2021 and that year it was Neilson Powless who turned out on top. The only other formers winner on the start list is Julian Alaphilippe (2018).

Last year, Evenepoel attacked on the Jaizkibel, with roughly 100 kilometres to go. Pello Bilbao was one of the few riders who managed to follow the move, and was the only one who stayed on Evenepoel’s wheel during the Murgil climb. Eventually, he was bested in the sprint by the Belgian star.
