Race report
The peloton splits early in the race, with Tadej Pogacar finding himself in the second group. The gap stretches to half a minute, but the World Champion closes it near the Adsteeg with help from a few teammates. Then it’s up to the break away riders. Hartthijs de Vries and Jelle Johannnink join forces with Rémi Cavagna, Michel Hessmann, Robert Stannard, Emiel Verstrynge, Cedric Beullens, and Jarrad Drizners. The eight open up a maximum lead of over 4 minutes.
On the second ascent of the Cauberg, the lead group has been whittled down to Johannink, Cavagna, Hessmann and Beullens. By then, the peloton is already breathing down their necks, while Beullens cracks on the Geulhemmerberg. The other three are caught with 72 kilometres remaining.
Julian Alaphilippe launches an attack on the Gulperberg, with Tadej Pogacar immediately latching on. The duo opens up a 10-second gap, before the world champion heads out alone on the Kruisberg. He reaches the tummit of the Eijserbosweg half a minute ahead of the first chasers. That gap remains stable until the foot of the Keutenberg.
Mattias Skjelmose attacks from the chase group as the Keutenberg levels out, while Remco Evenepoel tracks him down just inside the last 25 kilometres.
On the Cauberg, they close to within 14 seconds of Pogacar. The chasers are just a handful of seconds further back. At the finish line, that gap has stretched to well over half a minute again – and it continues to grow to 1 minute.
Evenepoel and Skjelmose close in to within 7 seconds of the World Champion on the Bemelerberg. With 8 kilometres to go, they make the catch.
The three stay together until the finishing straight. Evenepoel launches the sprint from the front, but first Pogacar comes past, then Skjelmose as well. With a final burst of power, the Dane snatches the win.
