Race result
Penuela, Vandenbulcke, Braam, Buijsman, Malseed, Sanguineti and Hamme race to a lead of more than 5 minutes. But when they crest the Cauberg for the first of four climbs Ilaria Sanguineti and Shannon Malseed are the only leaders left. A strong chase group – Langvad, Van der Breggen, Niewiadoma, Vos, Moolman, Van Vleuten, Spratt, Vollering, Brand, Bastianelli, Longo Borghini, Deignan, Van Dijk – rejoins them when they cross the finish line for three final laps.
Deignan goes solo with 40 kilometres remaining, while 38 riders rejoin the chasing group. They tackle the Cauberg 20 seconds behind Deignan, who is brought back on the climb. A group of 25 riders cross the finish line in the lead before Hall, Longo Borghini and Spratt jump clear. They open up a gap of almost 40 seconds, but they are caught on the penultimate climb up the Cauberg. Still, they push on with fresh blood in their ranks – Niewiadoma – before it comes together on the Geulhemmerberg.
Shortly, Longo Borghini strikes and she solos to a lead of 10 seconds on the Bemelerberg. Spratt and Moolman go after the Italian to gobble her up inside the last 5 kilometres. All favourites regroup just before the Cauberg. Niewiadoma attacks on the lower slopes, while Vos goes after her. The home-rider can’t make it across and Van Vleuten takes her place. She goes to great lengths to close down the gap, but finishes three metres behind the Polish winner.
